1-Thiobutanol is a combustible liquid belonging to the alcohol category (containing a -OH hydroxyl group), with its vapor being flammable and having an anesthetic effect. Low concentrations irritate the eyes and nose, while high concentrations cause dizziness, drowsiness, and impaired judgment. It can be metabolized to aldehydes in the body (some alcohol metabolites are toxic). It is commonly used as an industrial solvent, cleaning agent, and fuel additive. Storage sites require PID or catalytic combustion probes to monitor vapor leaks.
