1-Pentene is an olefin (containing a C=C double bond) and is a combustible gas, which is colorless and flammable. In addition to the risk of fire and explosion, olefins generally have an anesthetic effect, causing dizziness and drowsiness upon inhalation. Some olefins (such as acrylonitrile and vinyl chloride) have carcinogenic risks. Olefins heavier than air accumulate in low-lying areas. Chemical production sites should monitor both LEL and VOC concentrations simultaneously.
