Phenyl isothiocyanate is a sulfur-containing organic compound (such as mercaptan/sulfide), which possesses a strong putrid odor (with an extremely low olfactory threshold, reaching ppb levels for mercaptan). It is commonly used as a natural gas odorant to facilitate leak detection. Its vapor irritates the mucous membrane and can cause damage to the liver and kidneys upon prolonged exposure. It is commonly found in the petroleum refining, paper-making, and pharmaceutical industries. PID (IP 9-9.5 eV) or dedicated electrochemical mercaptan sensors are commonly used for detection.
