Phenyl isothiocyanate is a sulfur-containing organic compound (such as thiol/thioether), which possesses a strong putrid odor (with an extremely low olfactory threshold, reaching ppb levels for thiol). It is commonly used as a natural gas odorant to facilitate the detection of leaks. Its vapor irritates the mucous membrane and can cause damage to the liver and kidneys upon prolonged exposure. It is commonly found in the petroleum refining, paper-making, and pharmaceutical industries. Commonly used sensors include PID (IP 9-9.5 eV) or dedicated electrochemical sensors for thiol detection.
