Bromine trioxide is a brominated organic compound, typically exhibiting stronger toxicity than its corresponding chlorinated counterparts. Its vapor irritates the respiratory tract, and certain varieties, such as bromomethane, are highly toxic and can be absorbed through the skin. It is predominantly used in fumigation for insect control, as a flame retardant, and in chemical synthesis. The use of bromomethane has been restricted under the Montreal Protocol. Commonly, it is monitored using PID or specialized sensors.
