Hazards & Toxic Symptoms
R22 (HCFC-22, difluorochloromethane) is a colorless gas with a slightly sweet odor, a traditional medium-temperature refrigerant, and an ASHRAE safety rating of A1 (low toxicity, non-flammable). Its main risks include: ① asphyxiation caused by oxygen displacement due to leakage in enclosed spaces; ② being a transitional ozone-depleting substance (ODP=0.055, controlled by the Montreal Protocol) and subject to complete phase-out in China by 2030; ③ decomposition at high temperatures (>250°C) releasing highly toxic substances such as HF, HCl, and COCl₂ (phosgene); ④ being a potent greenhouse gas (GWP=1810); ⑤ frostbite caused by contact with liquid R22. Commonly used infrared (NDIR)/semiconductor halogen sensors are used for monitoring.
