Phosgene (carbonyl chloride) is a colorless or slightly yellow gas with a new hay-like odor. It is listed in the Chemical Weapons Convention. Upon deep inhalation, it hydrolyzes in the pulmonary alveoli, producing hydrochloric acid (HCl) that burns lung tissue. The incubation period is 2-24 hours, after which pulmonary edema occurs, leading to death.
