Phosgene (carbonyl chloride) is a colorless or slightly yellow gas with a new hay-like odor. It is listed in the Chemical Weapons Convention. Upon deep alveolar hydrolysis, it produces hydrochloric acid (HCl) that burns lung tissue, with a latency period of 2-24 hours before onset of pulmonary edema leading to death.
