Hydrogen cyanide is a colorless, highly toxic gas with a bitter almond odor. It forms hydrocyanic acid when it comes into contact with water. It inhibits cytochrome oxidase, leading to tissue hypoxia. Exposure to 270 ppm can cause death within minutes.
