Hydrogen fluoride is a colorless, irritating gas that forms hydrofluoric acid (highly corrosive) when it comes into contact with water. It is easily absorbed through the skin and combines with tissue calcium ions, causing deep necrosis. Long-term exposure to low concentrations can lead to skeletal fluorosis.
