Nitrogen itself is non-toxic, but when the concentration in a confined space becomes too high, it can displace oxygen and lead to hypoxia and asphyxiation. Nitrogen normally accounts for 78% of the air, but a leak can reduce the oxygen concentration to below 19.5%, entering a hazardous zone.
