Nitrogen tetroxide (equilibrium with NO₂) is a reddish-brown irritating gas. It is a strong oxidizer. When inhaled deeply into the pulmonary alveoli, it can cause delayed pulmonary edema. It is also used as an oxidizer in aerospace propellants.
