Hazards & Toxic Symptoms
Phosphine is a colorless, highly toxic gas with a garlic-like odor (often containing impurities such as P₂H₄, which can lead to spontaneous combustion). It strongly inhibits cytochrome oxidase. Low concentrations can cause headaches and nausea, while high concentrations can lead to pulmonary edema, shock, and death.
