Hazards & Toxic Symptoms
Freon R123 is a halogenated hydrocarbon refrigerant with low inherent toxicity. The main risks are: ① asphyxiation caused by oxygen displacement due to leakage in enclosed spaces (such as cold storage rooms/machine rooms); ② release of highly toxic substances such as HF, HCl, and COCl₂ upon thermal decomposition; ③ destruction of the ozone layer by some varieties (CFC/HCFC), which is restricted by the Montreal Protocol; ④ strong greenhouse gas effect of HFCs (GWP > 1000). Commonly used monitoring methods include infrared (NDIR) or semiconductor halogen sensors.
