Hazards & Toxic Symptoms
R407a is a HFC mixed refrigerant (R32 + R125 + R143a) designed to replace R22 as a low-temperature commercial/industrial refrigerant. It has an ASHRAE safety rating of A1 (low toxicity, non-flammable). The main risks are: ① asphyxiation caused by oxygen displacement due to leakage in enclosed spaces; ② decomposition at high temperatures (>250°C) releasing highly toxic substances such as HF and COF₂; ③ being a potent greenhouse gas (GWP=2107, equivalent to 2107 times that of CO₂), with its use being phased out under the EU F-Gas Regulation; ④ frostbite caused by contact with liquid form; ⑤ due to being a mixed gas, imbalance in component ratios after leakage requires overall recovery and recharging. Commonly used infrared (NDIR)/semiconductor halogen sensors are used for monitoring.
