Hazards & Toxic Symptoms
Refrigerant 1234yf is a halogenated hydrocarbon refrigerant with low inherent toxicity. The main risks are: ① asphyxiation caused by oxygen displacement due to leakage in enclosed spaces (cold storage/machine rooms); ② decomposition upon heating, releasing highly toxic substances such as HF/HCl/COCl₂; ③ destruction of the ozone layer by some varieties (CFC/HCFC), which is already restricted by the Montreal Protocol; ④ strong greenhouse gas emissions (GWP > 1000) from HFCs. Commonly used infrared (NDIR) or semiconductor halogen sensors are used for monitoring.
