Hazards & Toxic Symptoms
Refrigerant 1234yf is a halogenated hydrocarbon refrigerant with low inherent toxicity. The main risks are: ① asphyxiation due to oxygen displacement caused by leakage in enclosed spaces (cold storage/machine rooms); ② decomposition upon heating, releasing highly toxic substances such as HF/HCl/COCl₂; ③ some varieties (CFC/HCFC) damaging the ozone layer (restricted by the Montreal Protocol); ④ potent greenhouse gases of the HFC category (GWP > 1000). Commonly monitored using infrared (NDIR) or semiconductor halogen sensors.
