Overall Plan for Gas Safety Management in University Laboratories

A three-tier architecture combining portable, fixed, and chemical cabinet sniffing, integrating with laboratory access control and fume hoods

Gas safety monitoring network for the chemistry building of a top-tier university in the north

Industry Pain Points

University laboratories face various gas risk types, scattered spaces, high staff turnover, and weak supervision: ① Leakage risk of gas storage cylinders (H2 / CO / CH4 / O2 / specialty gases) — a 985 university's colleges of chemistry, materials, and life sciences often have over 200 cylinders in use; ② Production of highly toxic vapors such as HCl / Cl2 / NH3 / HCN / H2S during experimental processes; ③ Inadequate ventilation speed in fume hoods / disconnection between fume hoods and gas detection systems; ④ Frequent rotation of students/graduate students, leading to insufficient safety training coverage; ⑤ Strict "double random" inspections by the Ministry of Education and the Emergency Management Bureau, and since 2024, the "Management Measures for the Classification and Grading of Laboratory Safety in Higher Education Institutions" requires laboratories above level three to be connected to the safety supervision platform. A laboratory explosion/poisoning incident (such as the formaldehyde leakage at Nanjing University of Aeronautics and Astronautics in 2021) can lead to work stoppages for rectification, impact teaching, and damage the school's reputation.

Solution Overview

U-Rion provides a four-level monitoring solution for university laboratories, encompassing "gas storage source + fume hood + laboratory space + central platform": 1. **Gas storage cylinder room**: Each cylinder is equipped with a dedicated combustible gas leak probe (H2 / CH4 / CO, etc.) + overall combustible gas in the room + combustion-supporting gas (O2 concentration > 23.5% to mitigate combustion risks) + video linkage; 2. **Fume hood wind speed + air volume monitoring**: Alerts for ultra-low wind speeds (< 0.3 m/s) are triggered, and fresh air is increased in conjunction with gas probes; 3. **Laboratory space**: Distributed toxic gas probes (selected based on experiment type, such as HCl / Cl2 / NH3 / HCN / VOC) utilizing an electrochemical + PID composite principle; 4. **Central EMS platform**: Real-time display of gas, video, and ventilation status across the entire university and laboratories, integrated with regulatory platforms from the Ministry of Education and the Emergency Management Bureau, automatically generating daily reports, abnormal warnings, and personnel positioning. It also includes a module for students to scan to enter and a safety access exam.

## Laboratory Classification and Distribution Strategy

– **Chemistry / Chemical Laboratory**: HCl + Cl2 + NH3 + VOC + Fume Hood Velocity
– **Life Sciences / Biochemical Laboratory**: H2S + HCN + Formaldehyde + CO2 (leakage from incubator)
– **Materials / Physics Laboratory**: H2 (thin film sputtering) + Ar (shielding gas, risk of oxygen deficiency) + He
– **Gas Chromatography / Mass Spectrometry (Analysis Platform)**: He + H2 + N2 + O2
– **Gas Storage Cylinder Room (Shared)**: Combustible LEL + Combustion Supporting O2 + Toxicity (selected based on actual gas type)
– **Fume hood (per hood)**: wind speed/air volume sensor, alarm for ultra-low wind speed 25% LEL → Shut off the main gas valve in the room + Initiate emergency ventilation + Close the access control to prevent others from entering
3. **Data Archive**: Records of gas concentration and ventilation status in each laboratory must be retained for at least 3 years (for traceability inspection by the Ministry of Education)
4. **Correction and Traceability**: In the event of an anomaly, it will be automatically pushed to the supervisor’s mobile phone, the college safety officer, and the school security office at three levels

## Regulatory Basis

– “Management Measures for the Classification and Grading of Laboratory Safety in Colleges and Universities” (2024) issued by the Ministry of Education
– GB 50346-2011 “Technical Code for Building of Biosafety Laboratory”
– GB 50016-2014 Code for Fire Protection Design of Buildings
– GB 50058-2014 Electrical Apparatus for Explosive Gas Atmospheres
– GBZ 2.1-2019 Occupational Exposure Limits for Hazardous Agents in the Workplace
– “List of Safety Inspection Items for Laboratories in Colleges and Universities” (updated annually by the Ministry of Education)

## Applicable Customers

985/211 universities (Tsinghua University, Peking University, Fudan University, Zhejiang University, Tongji University, Shanghai Jiao Tong University, University of Science and Technology of China, etc.); local key universities; research institutes affiliated with the Chinese Academy of Sciences; laboratories of affiliated hospitals of medical colleges; engineering training bases of vocational colleges; K12 middle school chemistry laboratories (part of the demand).
